SDG Time Capsule

VNG International - The Netherlands

The SDG Time Capsule contributes to the local dialogue for sustainable development

“What is your wish for our world in 2030?” Dutch mayors are answering this question by introducing their wish in the “SDG Time Capsule”, a tool proposed by VNG International, the international agency of the Association of Netherlands Municipalities. The time capsule has visited 8 cities since it was launched in 2016 and it is also open to citizens and civil society organizations. Its visit is mostly used as an opportunity to raise awareness of local officials and citizens on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to stress the ways in which they can contribute to achieve their targets.

The visiting of the “SDG Time Capsule” in Tilburg was the perfect occasion to organize a dialogue with local stakeholders to discuss on how to better inform citizens on the UN Global Goals. The municipality organised a public contest to allocate small budgets to awareness-raising local projects, presented in public and voted by the audience. The local government has thus played a key role in promoting local initiatives designed and developed by the local community.
